My Dells STP Experience

This summer the Dells Summer Training Program was full of successes and frustrations for me. I praise God for both the highs and the lows, knowing that He can use them both to bless others and continue forming me. There are many things I could share about the relationships I formed, the ways God is shaping my view of myself and of Him, and how God’s Word is becoming a greater part of my life, but I want to share one experience in particular.
One of the greatest joys I had this summer was walking alongside Kelley, a friend, a coworker at Culvers, and a sister in Christ. Kelley had occasionally hung out with the Navigators last summer, going to one or two NavNites, but this summer she regularly came to our Thursday night worship. When Kati, a fellow Navigator, started getting together with her to talk and read God’s Word, Kelley asked me to join them.
Kelley is also college-aged, but she has been through a lot of tough stuff in her short life. For a while she had been on the fence of trusting God, but wasn’t sure if she could. This summer as she realized her brokenness and need for Jesus, she reached a point of surrender. I cannot express the exhilaration I felt when Kelley told us she had decided it was worth it to trust God. As Kati and I prayed with her, praising God, I was literally moved to tears. 1 Corinthians 3:7-9a says,
“So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers…”
I claim no credit for Kelley’s transformation this summer – God is the one who changes hearts. I cannot even say I was the one who took initiative in our conversations– Kati reached out to her first, and then Kelley invited me. I just thank God for the privilege of getting to play a role in Kelley’s life. There is no greater adventure in life than walking with our Lord!
